Madhya Pradesh is located in the geographic heart of India and geologically, it is a part of Gondwana Plate. The state straddles the Narmada River, which runs east and west between the Vindhya and Satpura; these ranges and the Narmada are the traditional boundary between the north and south of India. Physiographically, there are several plateaus i.e. plateau of Malwa, Central India, Bundelkhand, the Vindhyan and the Baghelkhand. The average elevation is from 305 to 610 m above msl (highest point is Dhoopgarh with an elevation of 1350 m. in Panchmari) and Aeavelli, Vindhya, Satpuda, Mahadeo, Gawligarh and Maikal hill ranges extend across the state. The climate is tropical with four seasons, the winter (Dec.-Feb.), the summer (Mar.-May), the monsoon (June-Sept.) and the post-monsoon (Oct.-Dec.). The temperature ranges from 1-5°c in winter to 47-48°c in summer. The average annual rainfall varies from 700-1600 mm, and the humidity ranges between 20-30 % in summer to 85-95% in rainy season.
