LIZARDS OF MADHYA PRADESH
Lizards are a widespread group of squamate and like other reptiles, are cold blooded vertebrates. They are active during the summer and monsoon months, and hibernate through the cold months of winter. Their habitat and distribution is extremely diverse-in homes, scrub, foliage, rocky crops, on the ground and even underground. Their body structures are adapted to their habitats, feeding habits and continue existence strategies. The life cycle of lizards begins with the mating of the male and female. Typically, males change their colour during the breeding season, in order to be more attractive. After mating, female lay shelled eggs that develop in ambient temperature. The eggs and young receive very little parental care. India is home to more than 230 species of lizards, there are 26 species have been recorded from Madhya Pradesh so far. Habitat destruction is one of the most significant threats that lizards are facing. Although, the monitor lizards are hunted for their meat and skin and the spiny tailed lizards are sought for their oil. Lizards serve as indicators of the health of the surroundings. As their primary prey is insects, they effectively control the population of insect pests, who otherwise would impact our crops. They are also an effective mechanism to control mosquitoes in our home.
