Crocodiles are ancient group of reptiles, with typical reptilian pattern body, short limbs and a massive long tail. The skin of the body is armoured with bony plates and the tail is with serrated scales. Both the marsh and the salt-water Crocodiles are look alike, but the Gharial is easily identifiable because of its comparatively longer and slender snout. They are excellent swimmers and are able to walk or slide on land with the help of their belly. Crocodiles are hole-nesting species. Nests are located in a wide variety of habitats and female have been known to nest at the opening of of or inside, their burrows. India has 3 species of crocodiles out of which 2 species are found in Madhya Pradesh. Gharial and Mugger are known to be commonly seen in many areas of the state earlier. However, since human dominated most of their habitat and pollute the water bodies badly during the last few decades, so they are extirpated due to fear. Currently only the National Chambal Sanctuary is the place in the state where viable population of these two crocodilians exists.Habitat destruction, fragmentation and transformation, mortality due to increased fishing activities are principal threats to crocodile’s populations. |
