Diagnostic characters:

Small worm-like creatures with smooth, polished scales. Body uniformly cylindrical; tail is very short ending in a small sharp stiff point. Snout rounded; strongly projecting; nostrils lateral; eyes distinct and barely visible, Scales in 20 rows around the body; 290-320 transverse rows of scales. Brown or blackish above, lighter below, snout, anal region and end of tail usually whitish with smooth scales. SVL: 150mm. |
Habit and Habitat: |
Mainly nocturnal and burrowing in nature; found under logs, moist leaves and humus in wet forests; seen under black cotton soil of Malwa up to out the depth of 100 cms. Lays 5-8 self-fertilized eggs. 6 cooked rice size eggs were laid by a female at Ujjain in the month of August, 1998 |
Diet: |
Feeds on soft bodied larvae and eggs of ants and termites. |
