Diagnostic characters:
Body short and thick; scales of head and tail strongly keeled; eye small with vertical pupil; tail very short. Dorsum variable; reddish-brown; yellowish-white, dark-brown or black with irregular dark brown, black-edged blotches; under part yellowish-white. SVL: 1000mm.
Habit and Habitat:
Mainly nocturnal. Found below rocks, rat holes and termites mounds.
Diet:
Feeds on insects, lizards, snakes, birds and rodents.
Legal Protection:
WL (P) A, 1972-Schedule IV
Conservation status and Threats:
Not accessed. Common. No serious threat observed
Distribution: Madhya Pradesh: Throughout.  Elsewhere in India: Throughout excluding the Northeast, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Elsewhere outside: Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
