Diagnostic characters:

Body slender; scale smooth with a flattened head slightly broader than neck; snout more or less spatulated, projecting beyond lower jaw. Glossy grey, light/dark-brown, chestnut-brown or black above usually 10-20 narrow white or yellow cross bars that fork on sides of body; a pair of triangular whitish or yellowish blotches on each side of the occiput; upper lip white or spotted with brown. Habit and Habitat: |
Strictly nocturnal; found in caves, piles of stones, wells, hollow trees and often in houses. |
Diet: |
Feeds on geckos, skinks, frogs and occasionally mice. |
