Diagnostic characters:
Fairly long and slender; head distinctly broader than neck, large eyes has vertical pupil; vertebral scale row enlarged; ventral scales with a pair of lateral keels. Body colour grey or reddish-brown with distinct black and white patches. A series of small black spots may be present on the two sides of ventrals, or in some cases the black spots are scattered
Habit and Habitat:
Nocturnal; arboreal; mostly lives in woodland forest, dry deciduous forest, abandoned nests and tree holes of Mahua tree, Mango tree. When alarming raise forebody and hisses loudly
Diet:
Lizards, birds and small mammals

WL (P) A, 1972-Schedule IV
Conservation status and Threats:

Not accessed. Rare.  No serious threat observed.

Distribution: Madhya Pradesh: Chhattarpur. Elsewhere in India: Throughout Peninsular India, in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Uttarakhand. Elsewhere outside: Sri Lanka
