Ocellate Shield Tail Snake

Diagnostic characters:
Body slender; head narrower than neck; snout sharply pointed; tail very short; scales in 17 rows; ventrals 144-176; subcaudals 5-11 pairs; scales smooth. Dorsum glossy dark-brown, with or without small yellow dots and larger one on the underside. Distinct yellow line along sides of neck a broad yellow stripe on each side of tail. SVL: 250mm
Habit and Habitat:
Nocturnal and burrower
Diet:
Earthworms, and small insects.
Legal Protection:
WL (P) A, 1972-Schedule IV
Conservation status and Threats:
Not accessed. Rare. No serious threat observed.
Distribution: Madhya Pradesh: Hoshangabad (PBR). Elsewhere in India: Throughout drier zones of the peninsula and Northwest. Elsewhere outside: Pakistan and Nepal
